”Reaching initial operating capability in October of 1983, the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk was born out of the need to strike targets in denied airspace. Its faceted design gives it an extremely low Radar Cross Section that enables it to hide from radar. This reduced RCS and the fact that the plane flew mostly at night earned the F-117 the nickname “Ghost” by the Saudis during Operation Desert Storm, where it flew more than 1,300 combat sorties scoring 1,600 direct hits on high value targets.”
